Caol Ila Unpeated 15 Year Old
70cl, 60.4% abv
This 15 year old has been made from unpeated malted barley; very unusual for an Islay distillery. It was matured in first fill ex-Bourbon casks, filled in 1998 and is part of Diageo's Special Releases initiative. It is bottled at a mighty 60.4% abv with 10,668 bottles being produced.
Colour: Bright gold.
Nose: A faint early note of smoke soon fades. Gentle early softness is edged away by a fruity sharpness and there's a late hint of treacle toffee.
Palate: Smooth texture with rich sweetness. Becomes bitter-sweet with a distinct, drying maritime saltiness. In all, a warming and spicy mouth feel; fresh and clean.
Finish: Medium; sweet and drying. Water reveals a smooth, aromatic combination of sweet and bitter notes with late orange blossom.
