Glasgow Pubs

Here are a few recommendations of Glasgow Pubs if you are visiting the city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. These are pubs that we really like, have been “merry” in and have found and lost love in (along with mobile phones, wallets and a bowling ball – once). Fairly standard for any pub in the country, probably.

These Glasgow pubs all offer different things, yet are linked by the famed Glasgow camaraderie and desire to please. If you are a stranger to the city and want to experience a great time amongst friends you haven’t met yet (cliche alert!), take a trip to any of these pubs; we are sure you won’t be disappointed.

In alphabetical order……

Glasgow Pubs Bon AccordBon Accord
Situated at 153 North Street, a short distance from The Hydro and the S.E.C. (Games Venues), the Bon Accord is a wonderful pub that serves up terrific food and has a huge stock of single malt whiskies (over 350 different ones) and proudly states that they serve more than 800 selected real ales over the course of a year. This multi award winning pub has held the coveted title of “Scottish Whisky Bar of the Year; 2012” Impressive.

Glasgow Pubs Doublet

The Doublet
Nestling at the bottom of Park Road (close to the Games Lawn Bowls venue) is The Doublet – a great traditional pub frequented by the cosmopolitan local clientele and other revellers from further afield. This Glasgow pub feels unchanged since the 1960’s – in a good way. Serving a great range of single malt whiskies and hearty pub fayre; it really is a terrific “local” that makes all visitors feel welcome, no matter how far they have travelled.

Glasgow Pubs GriffinThe Griffin
You’ll recognise the Griffin at 266 Bath Street by the “A” board outside on the pavement; painted fresh every day with “rubbish” written on it. Folk drive past this pub just to see what nonsense the “A” board is declaring on that particular day. They have an informative website with amongst other things, a gallery of the staff with the legend “National Insurance Numbers on Request”. Bobsie, the owner is on holiday at present, so if you do visit during the Commonwealth Games, you may experience a slightly detuned Griffin, but still worth a visit.

Glasgow Pubs LebowskisLebowski’s
Situated in the Finnieston area of Glasgow (1008 Argyle Street), this is one of the trailblazing pubs in that area. Finnieston has become the “new” Ashton Lane, but without the desire to be trendy; which (ironically) it is in spades. Their speciality drink is White Russians; some 35 different versions are featured on the drinks card. Whilst we tend to favour whisky based bars; Lebowski’s is truly one of our favourites with great staff and great burgers.

Glasgow Pubs Pot StillThe Pot Still
Anchored right in the city centre at 154 Hope Street, this lovely Glasgow Pub is run by the Murphy family; stalwarts of the traditional Glasgow pub scene. They have a very impressive array of single malt whiskies – outstanding in fact. They work hard at pleasing their customers and nothing is too much trouble to them. Whiskies are at the core of The Pot Still and the staff have an encyclopaedic knowledge of “the water of life”.
