Caol Ila 1988 Single Malt Whisky
70cl, 52.7% abv
The Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseur’s Choice range was created in 1968 by whisky visionary, George Urquhart. Over the years this range has featured single malts from almost one hundred Scottish distilleries. Comprising more than 2,000 individual bottlings, each Connoisseur's Choice tells its life story through its label: cask type, bottling date, strength, vintage and tasting note. Always non-chill-filtered, these rare single cask and small batch expressions have been created by the unique expertise of matching spirit to oak casks, handed down through four generations of the same family.
This 1988 Caol Ila was bottled in January 2021 from a refill American hogshead cask which yielded 222 bottles. It is quite an exceptional dram.
Colour: Light gold.
Nose: Rich red apple and vanilla pod aromas lead to hints of dried banana. Pineapple and coconut are balanced by hints of bonfire embers.
Palate: Smooth flavours of poached pear and honey give way to undertones of cured meat. Notes of Demerara sugar develop alongside rich pineapple and coconut.
Finish: A medium finish with subtle spice and lingering sweet smoke.
