Mackinlay Shackleton - The Discovery

70cl, 47.3% abv

This is the exact replica of the whisky left in Antarctica by Sir Ernest Shackleton during his Antarctic expedition between 1907 and 1909. The whisky was painstakingly re-created down to the very last detail by Whyte & Mackay. The final replica bottle of Mackinlay's blended malt contains whiskies from Speyside, the Islands and the Highlands. The re-created recipe includes some very rare 1983 Glen Mhor. This is a limited release whisky and £5 from each bottle sold will be donated to the Antarctic Heritage Trust.

Colour: Warm gold with shimmering highlights.
Nose: Soft, elegant and cultured. Gentle aromas of peeled apple, pear and pineapple awake the senses. It is exciting and vibrant with appealing notes of oak shavings that free hints of vanilla, caramel and nutmeg. A note of marmalade, cinnamon and a sense of smoke and ginger complete the senses.
Palate: The generous abv % gives this spirit plenty of punch on the palate, but in a mild warming form. Harmonious and exhilarating with whispers of gentle wood smoke which slowly gives way to spicy rich toffee and treacle. These flavours linger long on the palate.
Finish: Sweetness on the tongue. There is earthy peat followed by tea and tobacco leaves lingering in the back of the nose.
