Adelphi Distillery

I’ve been following the progress of the Adelphi Distillery, the new single malt whisky distillery at Ardnamurchan with great interest. Ardnamurchan is the most westerly point of mainland Scotland – an area of incredible beauty, not least of all for its many sandy bays.

The original Adelphi Distillery was built in 1825 and at its peak was producing some 510,000 gallons of whisky a year. It was situated in the Gorbals area of Glasgow and drew its water from Loch Katrine, some miles north of the city in the Trossachs heartland.

The distillery last changed hands in 1902 and was mothballed some years later. In 1993, the great grandson of the second owner resurrected the name Adelphi Distillery and commenced sourcing and bottling some of the very finest malt whiskies available. These are now distributed worldwide.

In 2007, the Adelphi company began a feasibility study to assess the hurdles and benefits in building a new distillery from scratch. For several reasons they homed in on Glenbeg, Ardnamurchan; not least of all for cooling and potable water, easy access to the road network, proximity to timber extraction / process areas and very importantly, the ability to connect to a reliable source of hydro – electricity.  The visitor centre will be open this July and many guests are expected over the summer. If you are thinking of visiting the area, from personal experience, one of the best cottages to rent in Ardnamurchan can be found here. There are great walks and beaches right on the doorstep.

The Adelphi Distillery has a very informative Facebook page and an equally interesting website. At Whisky Please we look forward to stocking these much anticipated fine single malt whiskies. We are sure they will continue the tradition of quality and desirability that Adelphi are renowned for. Please visit our website for news on forthcoming new malts.
