Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery

The Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery lies in a quiet glen of the Kinchie Burn close to the village of Pencaitland, some 15 miles east of Edinburgh. The Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery‘s origins date back to around 1825 when it was founded by brothers John and George Rate. The Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery’s original name was Milton Distillery, but the brothers renamed it – probably around 1837. In 1969 the distillery stopped malting its own grain and the malting floors were turned into a museum of single malt whisky.

We recently visited this delightful distillery on our way back from a business meeting in the Scottish borders. Whilst we knew the distillery would be closed by the time we got there, it was a small detour and we wanted to tick our list of distilleries we have visited. It is easy to find and has the air of being centuries old. Its main building is very imposing when looking skywards from the distillery’s visitor entrance. The evening we were there was a beautiful Summer’s eve and the distillery was taking in a delivery of barley. The aroma as the load was delivered was very nice indeed; it put us in the mood for a “wee dram” – but since we were on our way north and weren’t hanging around – that was not an option. Maybe next time.

Glenkinchie Whisky DistilleryGlenkinchie Whisky Distillery produces some fine expressions and we are happy to sell their products from our site at a surprising rate given that the distillery is not one of the “weel kent” ones compared to the big boys.

Our favourite expression from The Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery is their 12 year old single malt whisky. It’s a great single malt whisky at a very reasonable price. That particular dram has been around a while as it replaced the 10 year old back in 2007. It is a light, delicate whisky and one you should maybe try as an aperitif, given its sweet notes and delicate floral fragrance.

We documented our brief visit via video and that can be seen here.
