Macallan Speymalt 1973 at Whisky Please
Macallan Speymalt 1973 Single Malt Whisky is a 2015 bottling of Macallan from Gordon & MacPhail. This is the latest expression from Gordon & MacPhail’s “Speymalt” collection and is one exceptional dram. This 1973 holds a really rich dark amber colour and drinks incredibly well with a long, lingering finish. With the “Speymalt Collection”, Gordon & MacPhail bottle a series of single malt whiskies from one of the world’s most famous distilleries – Macallan. Established in 1824 the distillery overlooks some of the finest fishing beats on the River Spey and is world renowned for it’s wonderful single malt whiskies. Under the 2009 Whisky Regulations, the “Speyside” designation can only be used by whisky distilleries in certain areas (not Craigellachie) in the Speyside region. However, whisky authorities consider The Macallan Whisky a notable Speyside Single Malt. Currently bottles of The Macallan Whisky indicate that it is a Highland Single Malt and the Company notes that “The Original and Spiritual Home” of The Macallan Whisky is Speyside.
Without water, Macallan Speymalt 1973 drinks as follows;
The nose has rich sherry influences with stewed plum, orange marmalade and peach aromas. Hints of marzipan and charred oak linger. The palate has black pepper initially with grapefruit, orange peel and dark chocolate. Complemented by a subtle hint of ground coffee.
Adding water;
The nose has floral aromas combining with hints of apple and cinnamon. Tropical fruit notes develop with banana and pineapple. With water, the palate has notes of creamy milk chocolate, orange peel, green apple and almond flavours initially. These combine with an underlying smokiness, cigar ash.
It is a very long finishing dram. Quite marvellous.
