Springbank 18 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

Our “Monthly Malt” for April 2015 is the very nice Springbank 18 year old single malt whisky. This is available from our website for the great price of £79.96 – a £10 reduction from our usual price (at the time of going to press!).

This is the second edition of the 18 year old from Springbank Distillery.

Springbank Whisky Distillery is the oldest independent family owned whisky distillery in Scotland. It was founded by Archibald Mitchell in 1828. The Springbank Whisky Distillery is in the stewardship of the founder’s great, great grandson; Hedley G. Wright. The Springbank Whisky Distillery is one of only a very few in Scotland that has the complete production process on the one site. The entire floor malting, maturation and bottling is carried out at the Springbank Whisky Distillery, producing Springbank Malt Whiskies.

Much debate has occurred with this whisky over “ice or no ice” or being contemporary; “rocks or no rocks”. We are advocates of people drinking whisky how they like it. There seems to be a fierce “no ice and no rocks” over this one though.

One commentator reckoned that cooling it down locked all the flavour in. We disagree and think that it has more depth than the first edition Springbank 18 year old single malt whisky and as such, happily drinks chilled. However – as mentioned above, whatever pleases you when drinking fine malt whisky is good with us.

The tasting notes for the Springbank 18 year old single malt whisky are as follows;

Nose; Full of authority; rich and creamy. It develops to reveal vanilla, ripe fruits and marzipan before hints of sherbet, almonds and strawberries.

Palate; Thick, full bodied and oily in texture. An extremely fruity and mellow taste which gives way to a sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour as it opens up.

Finish; Long and assured with a pleasant smoky end.

Springbank 18 Year Old Single Malt Whisky was named the Best Campbeltown Malt at the 2010 World Whiskies Awards. The signature sea salt freshness is perfectly complemented with a delicate, soft, Sherry lightness and an exotic peppery finish.

This is a great dram at a great price; see more and buy here.
