A World Cup Whisky

We were contacted this week by a customer who wanted a 40 year old whisky. It was wanted as a present for his friend’s 40th birthday. With the Football World Cup just around the corner, we recommended Tullibardine 1966 World Cup Edition 40 year old.

It’s a really great dram and at 48% abv, it certainly delivers. We Scots are a proud nation. It still jars with many of us that our neighbours south of Hadrian’s Wall have lifted the coveted Jules Rimet trophy. We Scots have struggled even to make our presence felt on the world football stage. It was with some surprise to us then, that Tullibardine christened their very fine whisky produced to commemorate the 2006 World Cup in Germany, as their 40 year old “World Cup Edition”; distilled in 1966. That year (1966) still jangles many a Scot as the year the “auld enemy” achieved something that we Scots probably accept that we can never achieve.

Fair play to Tullibardine for producing such a fine dram – one whose name probably only jars with us supporters of Scottish football.

Only 300 bottles have been released and our customer was over the moon to receive a bottle to give to his friend. Tullibardine 40 Year Old World Cup Edition was matured in Sherry wood before bottling; it is a malt of masterful proportions. Quite simply, this is an exceptional dram.  It has depth, character and a power that never overwhelms. Big and round with a delightfully long and mellow finish, this has aged extremely well.

Australian Scotsman

Whilst our customer lives in England, his friend lives in Australia and is currently over in the UK to celebrate his 40th birthday. It occurred to us after the Tullibardine had been dispatched to our customer that his mate is a dyed in the wool “Jock” (a Scotsman) who follows his nation’s football team from afar and may not take too kindly to being reminded about England’s crowning glory of winning a World Cup. However, we’re sure that the quality of the dram and the bond of friendship will prevail. No falling out please boys!
