The Open Championship 2015

Now that the sun (and wind!) has settled on the 2015 Open Championship, we can look back and reflect on another great and at many times, challenging championship.

St. Andrews was uncharacteristically stormy over the first two days of the tournament, resulting in a “day off” for us all from the golf on Saturday after play was suspended at 7:30am.

Worry not; for the supporters at the course, there was plenty to occupy them on the Saturday.

Happily, there are several well established distilleries not far from St. Andrews and also there are two recently established distilleries whose output is gathering pace.

Open ChampionshipClose by to St. Andrews itself is Kingsbarns Distillery, only a short 7 mile drive from the town. For more information on Kingsbarns Distillery, visit their website here, or read our previous blog on the distillery here. It is a great new distillery and well worth a visit.

Virtually inside St. Andrews itself is the Eden Mill Distillery. Started initially as a brewery, Eden Mill under the direction of its founder, Paul Miller, has moved recently into distilling very small batches of bespoke and quite delightful single malt whiskies. Their website, like their premises, is well worth a visit. We’re sure that many people visited Eden Mill over the Open Championship and were doubtless charmed by their story; it’s a good one!

The climax to the tournament this year was very exciting; going on to a play off with Zach Johnson beating Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen to win the Claret Jug. Congratulations to Zach for playing some wonderful golf over the four days. It was fitting that the home of golf hosted such a great championship (yet again!) and what better way to enjoy the sport than with a glass in hand of Scotland’s national drink watching golf at its birthplace?

Open Championship

The weather played its part in shaping this year’s tournament and the golfers and the course responded perfectly.

On to Royal Troon next year for the 2016 Open Championship – surely the prevailing westerlies can’t make their mark again – or can they?

Slainte!
