Lowland Whisky
The Lowland region of single malt whisky production lies south of a theoretical line between Greenock in the west and Dundee in the east, which separates the Highlands from the Lowlands. History has not been kind to the area, and today only three single malt whisky distilleries are still producing. Boasting a mild climate and flat farmland, the Lowland is an ideal region for growing barley, and, consequently, for producing whisky. The region is famous for producing light, traditionally un-peated whiskies that are renowned for their sweet, grassy notes and gentle style. Lowland single malt whiskies tend to be comparatively light-bodied, aperitif whiskies, earning them the affectionate nickname the ‘Lowland Ladies’. The Lowlands are also home to five of the country’s seven high-volume grain distilleries which produce the grain whiskies that are used in some of the world’s most famous whisky blends.
